SFEI is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Developer to join the IT/GIS department. This is a temporary, project-specific position to assist in the development of environmental spatial models for the Wetland Regional Monitoring Program (WRMP). The WRMP develops and implements monitoring strategies for aquatic systems around the Bay Area ( www.wrmp.org ). Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in one of the following fields; GIS, Geography, Computer Science, or related program from an accredited university plus a minimum of 5 years experience as a geospatial developer.
About the Project
In an effort to support the SF Bay Region Water Board's goal of mapping of riparian areas, the WRMP is currently developing a geospatial model that identifies Riparian habitat based on specific riparian functions. These riparian functions are translated through parameters of spatial data and developed as model modules. The modules are building blocks onto core code that the user can piece together through a front end interface to produce a customized map of riparian habitat for their spatial footprint. The model has been developed using ArcGIS ArcObjects and VBA.

Work schedule is flexible with set number of hours for the duration of the project. Hours can be worked FT or PT, but should be worked on-site. Depending on project availability, there may be opportunity of a longer-term position.
Required skills/characteristics
- Five years experience in related work as principle programmer
- Experience developing environmental models using using ArcGIS ArcObjects and VBA
- Experience working with the full suite of ESRI geoprocessing tools (e.g. buffer, clip, intersection) and data processing tools (e.g. projection transformations, different file and data formats)
- Advanced understanding of spatial data formats, tools, and concepts
- Excellent organization and attention to detail
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to make engaging presentations to internal or external audiences is advantageous
Desirable skills
- Experience with open source spatial software and APIs
- Experience in an environmental professional field
Primary duties include
- Working closely with both technical and science staff to create and maintain modeling tools and related applications for the Institute and its clients
- Gathering system and project requirements from the client (or project partners) and generating Software Requirements Specifications
- Managing the testing process and development of applications including timelines and deliverable products
- Documenting model code, including functions, processes and interface
- Staying informed on GIS technologies and strategizing with staff on the most appropriate technologies for our riparian model applications and for meeting other GIS project and Institute goals
- Training end users of the model
- Providing mentoring and assistance to other GIS staff as appropriate
