Update from Doug on the CALGIS conference in Palm Springs.

Conclusion

The conference had:

• 56 Vendor booths
• 537 Attendees

Item

Update from Doug on the National URISA conference in Long Beach 2001.

Conclusion

• Tentative date set at October 20 – 24, 2001.
• APWA has expressed an interest in joint participation if its members can get a lowered admission rate.
• So Cal URISA asked to develop public works track.
• Hillary Perkins is the tentative conference chair.
• Attendance is projected at 600 persons.
• The impact of this on the CALGIS 2002 conference is uncertain, but should be explored.

Update from Doug on the Cal GIS 2001 conference in Sacramento.

Conclusion

• The conference is scheduled for Wednesday – Friday, February 21-23, 2001
• Call for papers and vendor sponsorship forms have already been mailed out. Check out the website: www.calgis.org

Update on from Nosh on the National conference in Orlando.

Conclusion

Topics for round table discussions were requested and ideas suggested included:

• Certification for GIS practitioners
• Document management systems
• Meta-data, and the lack of data maintenance and documentation
• Approaching the USA Alert system
• Public access to GIS data, including privacy laws

Update from Eric on non-profit status..

Conclusion

• Contact was made with BAAMA for a copy of their application. The plan is to substitute SoCalURISA for BAAMA and send it in.
• We are in possession of a manual detailing how to apply for non-profit status.

Treasurer’s report

Conclusion

• The projected loss from the APWA/URISA conference in Carson (Nov 1999) is projected at ($1,200).
• A proposal to split the loss between the two organizations is being reviewed.

A major initiative is now on to re-establish the Inland Empire section.

Conclusion

• A professionally run 6 hour workshop on geo-coding will be offered, free to all prospective Inland Empires members, and free also to all members of other sections.
• Eric Bauman to forward Ingrid Bruce with contacts at Saddleback GIS program, to explore the possibility of holding workshops there.
• Cal State San Bernardino is also being explored. If this is successful 2 to 3 such workshops will be hosted per year.
• The site for the first workshop is Cal Poly Pomona.
• Tentative date is October 12, or 13, 2000.
• Ingrid Bruce working on the finalization of details.
• Ingrid is also working on mailer to Inland Empire members, Eric to forward any databases gathered for Inland Empire to Ingrid.

Cal Poly Pomona is interested in advertising their program in the section newsletters.

Conclusion

• Everyone is encouraged to please forward all advertising rates to Ingrid.

Item

Certificate and undergraduate programs are turning out students with limited skills in such GIS core issues as:

• Topology
• RDBMS
• Cartography
• Accuracy / precision
• Error management

Conclusion

• None at this time. However, as GIS professionals, we should offer our assistance, whether it is participation on a Board for GIS education or even to speak to a class on employer expectations etc.
